Last Transactions- Week 9

Last week I bought Costco as a trade for Thanksgiving so I sold it this week as one of my transactions. Costco is in the consumer goods sector and they sell a large variety of things including food, clothes, etc. I bought 20 shares for $81.43 each which falls on the lower middle portion of the  $68.13 -$ 87.68 52 week range. I sold it for $82.09 so the good new is I did make some money, but I checked the price of Costco and it's selling for $87.02 today. I didn't sell at the right time. Some competitors are Walmart and Target are very high on the 52 week range right now too, I dont  wish I would have bought them instead I just didn't time my sale right.

The second transaction I made this week was investing in Caterpillar. It is int he services sector. Caterpillar is a construction machinery company; I bought them because they are doing really well I I think they will just keep getting better, but there is also construction going on everywhere so I feel like I will stay solid. I bought 18 shares for $91.44 each which falls in the lower middle of the  $67.54 - $116.55 52 week range. Some of Caterpillars competitors are CNH and VOLVY.PK, I chose Caterpillar because it's a bigger company, has more employees, and has a larger net income than any of them. It also has a dividend of 2%. I predict Caterpillar will go up $5 in the next two weeks. It's already selling for $96 and it's 1 year predicted price is $116.

Job Shadow

For my job shadow I'm going to the Powell Hospital to work with Cassie Tinsley. She works at the human resource office. I'm excited because I'm really interested in a lot of jobs in the medical field and I'm hoping I get to see what goes on every day at the hospital. I don't know for sure if I want to be in the medical field or not, but I think this will be a great opportunity for me to experience even if I don't decide to be a doctor. The thing I'm a little nervous about is what were actually going to be doing all day.

Insider Trading

1.What is your opinion of the topic of the video? explain
When i first thought about insider trading, I thought it seemed wrong. However i have changed my mind because i think it is fair for people to use their advantages. Most people would do the same thing if they were in that positon. It's not illegal and part of the job is getting insider information. People with other jobs have advantages that they use as well, so I believe using insider indormation is just fine.

2.What can you do about your opinion? How can you make you opinion count?
I think if I tell people my opinion about insider trading, they would start to look at it from a different view. They really arent doing anything wrong so if  people could see taht, they might not make such a big deal out of it.

3.What is insider trading? What was the information that caused Martha Stewart to go to prison?
Insider trading is when people in congress know things about the stock market and what specific stocks are going to do so they buy or shortsell depending on the stock. Martha Stewart got insider information from someone at the company she invested in who told her to sell because the stocks were going to dive.

4.What is black friday? When did it get it's name? What is cyber monday?
Black friday is the day after Thanksgiving when everyone goes shopping because of the huge salses. It is the buisiest shopping day in the United States. It got it's name because it's the day that is know to get stores that arent doing well out of the "red." Cyber Monday is similar to black friday except its the Monday after thanksgiving and all of the sales and shopping go on online.

My first transaction this week was investing in Aflac. It is in the financial sector and is a health and life insurance company. I thought this would be good to invest in because insurance is important to have and most people buy it, I'm also trying to make sure I invest in companies from several different sectors. i bought 20 shares for $44.41 each which falls pretty much in the middle of the $31.25 - $59.54 52 week range. There is also a 3% dividend. I chose Aflac over it's competitors American Fidelity Life Assurance and Nippon Life Insurance for a few reasons. First because I felt like Aflac is very well know and used. Secondly, there wasn't a lot of information about other companies and from the information that was there i could tell aflac had a lot higher profit margin even though they had fewer employees. I predict Aflac will go up about $2 dollars in the next couple weeks.

The second transaction this week was buying Costco. I bought this as a trade because I think their sales will go up a  lot during the week of thanksgiving. Costco is in the consumer goods sector. I only had about $1800 left so i only bought 20 shares for $81.43 each which falls pretty high on the $66.27 - $86.34 52 week range but i think it will be very profitable with Thanksgiving coming anyways. However, i do wish i would have purchased this a little earlier if the price was lower. Costco does have a 1.2% dividend as well. Their main competitors are Target and Walmart, I chose Costco over target because they don't sell the food that Costco does. I chose it over Walmart because I feel that around the holidays people tend to buy in  large quantities which is what Costco sells at a pretty good price, plus they have a better quarterly growth by aboout 8%. I predict that Costco will go up about $4 before I sell it after Thanksgiving.

Candy Stock Simulator

When we walked into the room yesterday all the lights were turned off and a couple projectors were playing vidoes of an actual stock exchange. The thing most people noticed was the candy all over the floor and tables. Each type of candy represented a different stock, and different colors of Laffy Taffy represented actual money. For example, banana was $5, cherry was $10 and so on. We then started our exchange, we had a few minutes to pick up as much candy as we could and gather it in our group. In the end I wished we would have gotten more at the beginning, my group was a little shy about grabbing the candy at first but it would have helped to have more to begin with. Then Mr. Kapptie wrote the prices of each type of candy on the white board. We aslo had gold and silver hersheys that represented actual gold and silver. Our class started trading pretty good right away and it became very hectic. Mostly because the prices changed every two minutes and we never knew if it would be positive or negative. This made us think about our actions more.
At first my group started trying to get as much gold as possible. We realized that some of the other candy had a lot of potential to grow a lot though too. Mr. Kapptie told us that Mr. Goodbars owner was in a scandal so we sold most of ours and bought it back when it was cheap because we thought it would go back up again. It also helped taht we had several Krackle bars when their company split. In the long run though, our gold was our biggest profit. In the end we had a little over $3000.

Game Standards

1. Students formulate solutions to economic problems
While playing the game, we face many of the same financial and economic problems that people see in real life. For examle, in order to build certain buildings I have to think about the amout of electricity i need and I have to have a certain amout of eco "points." I also have to gain certain tools in order to hire people. After I built my buisness center, i couldnt open it at first because I didnt have the right tools in order to hire an employee. So we have to think through the situations and work around problems we face along the way as well.
2.Students explain how different economic systems are organized for production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services
Just like in real life, in the game we build necessary building such as houses and apartments, we also build post offices, taxi stands, factories, and buisnesses. Pretty much all of the things that are used in an economic system. The shoe factory makes the shoes(production) and in return they have to be sold as well(distribution), the taxi service and apartments bring in rent(consumption). Besides just building the we go through the economic system in the game as well.
3.Students demonstrate an understanding of economic principals that influince individual financial planning
There are many things to buy in the game. At first I found myself spending all of my money as fast as I could so I could start my city off well. Then i realized that certain buildings and items are more important to have than others. Once I learned that I had to start planning what I needed most, and what items I would need in the future so I could start saving my money to purchase the things that will help me in the long run. i also had to learn how to use my city bucks sparingly so they werent wasted on useless things.
4.Students evaluate the impact of technology and how it has shaped history and influinced the modern world
Technology is used in many ways in the game. The first thing that comes to my mind are the windmills, they arent computers or ipads, but they generate electricity which is a huge form of technology. Technology is whats shaping the modern world. We can talk to eachother in an instant, play games together on a network, teach over the internet, etc. Technology could be taking some peoples jobs but it is also creating a lot of oppertunities that people before us never even imagined having.
5.Students analyze current events to better understand the world in which they live
Even in the game we get oppertunities to travel to other peoples countries. We also celebrate holidays like halloween, by doing this we gain extra money or are able to expand our employee choices. Like in real life, being involved with other people and keeping up to date can help us in the game.
6.Students explain how past events impact present and the future
The way you spend your money, decide on what buildings to build, and the layout of your city is affected the minute you make a decision. If you make bad choices early in the game its harder to come back from and it might take longer to get to the next level. Also, some choices you make are stuck for good and you will have to build around it in the future.
7.Students interpret charts, maps, and graphs to answer questions dealing with people places events or enviornments.
There are several charts on the game that show what level you have to be on to be able to build certain buildings. They also show what you need to be able to hire certain people and what economic and electrical rating you have to have to build buildings. The game also shows you what your strengths are and what you need to move on to the next level.
8.Students demonstrate an ability to organize and process information about people, places, and enviornments.
You have to set up our city in an organized and usable way. Everything has to by fully visible and it's best to put buisnesses seperate from houses so it is easy to see everything you have. Along with that we have to put parks and ecological sites in order to make up for buisness polution and build windmills, etc to run buisnesses electricity.

Occupy Wallstreet

I disagree with the occupy wallstreet movement because I firmly believe that people can make a living for themselves without having to blame the government for bumps in the road. Even children in poor families have oppertunities to get scolarships, they can join the milirary which helps with college, and sometimes we do have to take jobs we dont want to earn enough to move up. I also think its hard for us to make it right to take rich people money just because they are rich. I can find many reasons to back up the 53%.

Week 4 Transaction

The most significant transaction i made this week was investing in Visa. I started looking to invest in the financial sector mainly because we spend a lot of money, even in harder economic times, we all still pull out our credit cards on a regular basis. There are many credit card companies but I chose to invest in Visa because it dominates 70% of the market in companies that distribute and process credit cards. However this is not the only reason, over 6 million businesses accept visa credit cards and the amount of money spent with a Visa credit card has gone up 17% since last year. For these reasons I think Visa will be a better investment than competitors such as Matercard. I bought 215 stocks for $91.92 each which is pretty high on the $66.50 - $94.75 52 week range, but it has gone up since i bought it. For me this price was a plus since Mastercard is going for $338.85 right now. I did buy Visa as an investment, to me this is a company that I will leave alone for a long time because im confident  it will go up. I predict that Visa will go up, especially in the next few day, i have already started to see that trend.

Transaction 1
This week, my major transaction was investing in Exxon Mobile(XOM). My main reason for this was because i have real stocks in Exxon and I want to see how it's doing. Also, they have an 8 out of 10 on MSN Money, i feel like Exxon will be a solid company for me to invest in especially since the earnings growth has grown a signifigantly in this last year. I purchased the stocks at $71.88 in the $63.37 - $88.23 52 week range. It is now up to $73.23 per share. I have made money since i invested in Exxon Mobile, i predict that there will be some ups and downs but overall i think this company will prove to be a positive investment.

Transaction 2
My next transaction this week was selling apple. Apple was going to be an investment that i kept for a long time but after Steve Jobbs passed away i think selling is the best option for now especially since Apple has not been beeting me anywhere and I can always come back to it later once i find of if his death is going to effect the company or not. I sold all 45 shares for $370.50. The 52 week range is $286.91 - $422.86. Selling for that price is not bad, however i bought them for $413.42. My prediction is that i made the right choice but i was a little on edge about what the right choice was so i will just have to wait and see.

Week Two Transactions and Predictions.

Transaction 1
Earlier this week i realized that my apple stocks have been going down. I am using Apple as an investment company though so instead of selling it, i bought 15  more Apple stocks for $413.42. They are fairly expensive and i bought them at the higher end of the 52 week range, but i dicided to purchase because I am confident that their sales will go back up. I think Apple is a solid investment that i will want to keep. It's a popular company and releases new products often so it will prove to be a safe investment in the long run.

Transaction 2
My second transaction for this week is a trade. After learning the difference between trades and investments this week i realized that i had several companies i wanted to use as investments and wanted to look into a company that would be a good trade for me. I purchased 100 shares of Hershey Company for $59.60 each. With Halloween coming candy sales will be up and Hershey provieds a lot of different types of candy. I plan on selling about a week after Halloween. The stocks are also already up so i predict that this will be a smart trade and will result in a profit for me.

Transactions and Prediction

The transaction I am most confident in right now is Apple. I initially chose this company because of it's growing popularity. With iphones, ipods, and ipads out now i think the stocks are bound to go in the right direction. It also had a 10 out of 10 rating on MSN Moneys stock scouter so i believe i chose a good stock to invest in. So far, it has been my most reliable one. I can see it having even more of a benifit in the future as well. Our school bought ipads for every student and teacher in the school and i know other schools are doing the same, booth of my parents also own iphones and my brother and i have ipods, i believe Apple will continue to grow in popularity and the stocks will get even better. I also predict that my Microsoft stock will prove to be good. It is down at the moment but after some research ive decided to stick with it, i think the outcome will be positive for me. I have yet to decide weither or not my other investments will pay off.

9/11

Who is winning the war? I think that right now they are winning the war. That doesnt mean that we still can't, i really believe we can win. However, the war had caused many problems for our country. It has a tremendous affect on our economy because we have to spend so much more of our money. It creates even more differeng opinions among the United States people, and many citizens die fighting. Plus they are able to cause huge lasting trageties like 9/11 that still goes on ten years later. They were in a terrible state before we  came so even though we intervened, fighting and dying is normal for them so we might not have a huge effect on them like we want. So at this point, i believe that they are causing more problems for us than we are them so they are winning.

My Cause

The cause i am interested in goes along with my career path as well. I am passionate about helping people with serious or fatal illnesses and injuries, especially children. Don Imus is a professional speaker for the Tomorrows Children's Fund and could potentially be someone we could talk to through skype. Also, I know a guy named Dillon Rasmussen who has hand first hand experience with Make a Wish after he had a heart transplant and he could tell us all about his experience and the help he got from the make a wish foundation.

Expectations for Free Enterprise

My expectations for this class are to learn about money and the stock market. I know the general concept of these subjects but i know i need more in depth knowledge of how it works, whats good to do, and what is bad to do. I am aslo looking forward to doing some of the projects that i have seen students in the past do. I expect this class to be something new and interesting, I'm sre i will learn in a fun and meaningful way as well.
